Basic Terminologies

RAID Classes
  • RAID 0 -- Data Striped (split over several disks)
  • RAID 1 -- Data Mirrored
  • RAID 3 -- Data Stored with single Parity, the Parity DS on any disk
  • RAID 5 -- Data Stored with single Parity, dedicated disk for Parity
  • RAID 6 -- Data Stored with double Parity, dedicatd disks for Parities
SAN Storage -- EMC CLARiiON, Dell EqualLogic
  • Tier 1 -- RAIDs 0, 1, 1+0, 3, 5
  • Tier 2 -- RAIDs 0, 1, 1+0, 3, 4, 5, DP
Protocols are Fibre Channel (FCP) and iSCSI.

Fibre Channel Fabric for storage communication, the 'network segment'. On the high performance SAN are 4 switches in each Storage Processor.
Zones connect the switches to the server's A and B ports:
  • SERVERA0a, SERVERA1a, SERVERA2b, SERVERA3b
  • SERVERB0b, SERVERB1b, SERVERB2a, SERVERB3a
Each Storage Processor can take ownership of its failing partner's LUNs and will update Zones accordingly.

NAS Storage

NetApps Storage in JH (ITSNAS01a, ITSNAS01b) with fibre channels to NetApps Storage in LC (ITSNAS02a, ITSNAS02b, newer model). Each NAS has a group IP address (Virtual Interface, vif0), 4 nics and one RLM.

Snapshots add 20% to a LUN's storage requirements.

Services offered: Quota (Staff, Student, Faculty, etc.), Campus Backup, Shapshot, de-Duplication.
